Nobility crown MontserratDicen algunos autores que el fundador de este linaje fue Poncio de Guardia, uno de los que ayudaron al conde Borrell en 986 a libertar a Barcelona del yugo de los musulmanes. Sus descendientes reconquistaron los alrededores de la montaña de M., estableciendo varios señoríos. Fundaron y dotaron el famoso monasterio. En 1270, Melchor Guardia trocó este apellido por el de M. como lo afirma mosén Jaime Febrer. Dicho caballero tomó parte en la conquista de Valencia. Su valor mereció mucha estimación del rey don Jaime I. Los M. se extendieron por Cataluña, fundando nuevas casas en las ciudades de Reus (Tarragona) y de Cervera (Lérida), y también en la villa de Granyena, del partido de Cervera. Descendientes, sin duda, del caballero Melchor Guardia, llamado después Melchor M., que se halló en la conquista del reino de Valencia, moraron en la villa de Canet lo Roig, del partido judicial de San Mateo (Castellón de la Plana). En 1681 Francisco de M. fue agraciado con el marquesado de Tamarit. El estudio del escudo heráldico familiar nos "habla" de quienes formaron el origen de la familia M., pues esa era su función, la de manifestar a los demás sus elementos diferenciales, pues la inclusión del elemento montaña señala el origen topográfico de la familia, generalmente indica el origen de la propiedad. Los esmaltes del arma de los M. pregonan los siguientes valores: el Gules es el símbolo de la fuerza, del poder, del amor ferviente a Dios y al prójimo, tal es el significado de este esmalte, a lo que habría que añadir el afán de dominio, el coraje, la audacia, la fortaleza y la magnanimidad, un alto porcentaje de este tipo de escudos familiares se dieron por actos de guerra. ...
