It is derived from a habitation name from the place called 'Moyon' in La Manche, so called from the Gallo-Roman personal name 'Modius' (in itself from the Latin word 'modus' meaning measure). In English it is also a nickname from the Anglo French Norman word 'noun' meaning monk, and in Cornwall, England, it is a nickname for a slender person, from Cornish word 'mon' meaning thin.
