Antica famiglia umbra, di avita e chiara nobiltà, la cui blasonatura è riportata dal Gamurrini, nell'"Istoria genealogica delle famiglie nobili Toscano et Umbro", stampato in Firenze dal Sanesi nel 1641. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di illustri genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata nel nome proprio "Morgante", appartenuto al capostipite, rinvenibile, forse, proprio in quel Messer Morgante Morgantina, eletto priore nel 1289.
