Tale cognominizzazione, antichissima, dovrebbe derivare dal nome della Gens Portia o dal nomen latino Porcius, Portius e le relative versioni femminili, probabili nomi portati dai o dalle capostipiti, di cui, purtroppo, non abbiamo notizie.
