Antica famiglia siciliana, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Al dir di illustri genealogisti, tal casato sarebbe un ramo della nobilissima famiglia Scammacca, oriunda dall'Alsazia ma passata in Sicilia, sul principio del secolo XV. Un Blasco S., catanese, fisico di re Martino e protomedico del Regno nell'anno 1403, per i servizi prestati a re Martino il giovine, alla regina Maria e a re Martino il vecchio, ottenne, con privilegio dato a 8 settembre 1409, infatti, la concessione del feudo Murgo, con titolo baronale. Successivamente, stando a tal ricostruzione, alcuni discendenti del detto Blasco furono detti Scammacca del Murgo o, più semplicemente, Murgo. Stando, invece, ad altre ricostruzioni genealogiche, tal casato nulla avrebbe a che fare con gli Scammacca, bensì, verosimilmente, sarebbe stato fregiato del cavalierato, in seguito alla partecipazione, sotto i vessilli aragonesi, connotata da coraggio e virtù, di un Carlo Murgo ...
