Aparece anotado en el expediente de pruebas de nobleza de un caballero de este linaje que ingresó en la Orden de Santiago, que los Donis se apellidaron en tiempos antiguos O., de lo que se deduce que ambos apellidos son un mismo. Lo confirma la genealogía que ese expediente contiene, en la que el aludido caballero y su padre y abuelo figuran apellidados "Donis", así como su madre, que pertenecía a la misma casa, apareciendo, en cambio, apellidado "O." el abuelo materno. A más de ésto, en otro expediente de pruebas relativo a un hermano del anterior caballero, tienen el apellido "O." el pretendiente y sus antecesores. Ambos hermanos eran carnales e ingresaron en la misma fecha en la Orden de Santiago, y si en sus respectivos expedientes, sin duda incoados a la vez, aparece el uno apellidado Donis y el otro O., así como su padre y abuelo, clara prueba aporta ese dato de que O. y Donis eran tenidos por un mismo apellido y que fueron usados indistintamente por los miembros de esa familia. El linaje es gallego y quizás originario de la parroquia de Donis (cuyo nombre tomara) del Ayuntamiento de Cervantes y partido judicial de Becerreá, en la provincia de Lugo. Y si esta procedencia puede ser dudosa, no lo es el hecho comprobado de que los O. o Donis tuvieron casa muy principal en la ciudad de Pontevedra. De esa casa fué descendiente Juan de O., natural y Regidor de Pontevedra, que casó con doña Francisca Coutiño, natural de Oporto (Portugal), de la que tuvo a Ventura de O. ...
