Antica ed assai illustre casata toscana, di chiara ed avita virtù, detta Pacchiana o Pacchiani, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni italiane ed europee. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di autorevoli genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata in un soprannome, originato dal vocabolo "pacchia"m nella sua accezione arcaica di "cibo, pasto abbondante", con il significato forse di crapulone o ingordo, forse a sottolineare una particolare ingordigia dei capostipiti. In ogni modo, con partito del 25 maggio 1831, la Magistratura civica di Prato propose l'ascrizione al ceto nobile di quella città dei figli di Giuseppe, di Giovacchino Pacchiana, dott. Cesare e Alessandro. Tale proposta venne accolta con rescritto sovrano dell'8 luglio dello stesso anno. Con altro rescritto 20 dicembre 1833, emanato in seguito a partito della stessa Magistratura del 29 ottobre, ottennero identica nobilitazione i figli di Vincenzo, di Filippo Pacchiana, canonico Luigi e Damiano.
