La famiglia Sacchi era originaria di Alessandria della Paglia, trasferitasi a Viterbo nel 1297 con un Gian Giacomo, chiamatovi dal pontefice Bonifacio VIII (Benedetto Gaetani) in qualità di tesoriere del Patrimonio di San Pietro. Giovan Giacomo, nipote del precedente, fu creato nel 1419 gonfaloniere di Corneto; Pier Giovan Paolo, figlio di Giovan Giacomo, fu nel 1431 dall'imperatore Sigismondo creato cavaliere aurato e conte palatino. Al principio del XVIII secolo la famiglia Sacchi stava per estinguersi, non sopravvivendo che i figli di Alessandro Sacchi, l'arcivescovo Paolo e la sorella Giulia, maritata a Giovanni Antonio Tazi.
