L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di illustri genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata in un soprannome legato al mestiere di "chi fabbricava pancere, corazze", svolto, probabilmente, da un, oggi ignoto, capostipite. Secondo alcune ricostruzioni araldiche, tal famiglia sarebbe della stessa agnazione dei Panziroli di Roma e ciò spiegherebbe perché secondo alcuni avrebbero eguale blasonatura. In ogni modo, secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, il casato dei Panzironi godette del cavalierato sin dal XIV secolo, ovvero sin dall'epoca in cui vivevano i fratelli Martino e Francesco P., cavalieri crociati, i quali, valorosamente, combatterono sotto i vessilli del cardinale Albornoz, nelle campagne che sottomisero il Lazio, Spoleto, i Montefeltro di Urbino, i Malatesta di Rimini e gli Ordelaffi di Forlì.
