Vieille noblesse vellave aussi mentionné Paulhien et parfois Paulian (lat.: Pauliani). Certaines branches dérogèrent par des charges de judicature et passèrent dans l'ordre de la bourgeoisie. Dalmas, qualifié chevalier, chevalier de St-Jean de Jérusalem, donne à l'hôpital de St-Jean du Puy, en 1170, pour son admission dans l'ordre, une maison et des terres situées à St-Privat-d'Allier, à Varenne et au Vernet. Jean fut abbé de Pébrac de 1240 à 1242. N. Paulhien chevalier et Beraud damoiseau, son fils, vendent des terres à Godefroy de Cayres seigneur d'Agrain en 1263. Le même Beraud et son frère Léon, rendent hommage au seigneur d'Agrain, en 1265, de leurs fiefs des Arcis près Alleyras et d'Ouïdes. Barthélemy et André Paulien reconnaissent tenir de l'évêque du Puy le mas de Bacelles, mandement de Chapteuil. Beraud II Paulien, damoiseau, vivait en 1303. Etienne Paulien était seigneur d'Ouïdes en 1314; Reymond tuteur, le 14 décembre 1327, de Pierre, Armandon, Reymond, Bertrand, Jean, Catheine, Reymonde, Armandonne et Vierne Paulie d'Ouïdes, tous enfants de feu Etienne damoiseau. Jean fils de feu Etienne, est qualifié seigneur d'Ouïdes en 1358. Il eut pour fils: Pierre Paulien damoiseau, seigneur d'Ouïdes et d'Alleyras (1370-1400), neveu d'autre Pierre, religieux de Pébrac. A une autre branche se rattachaient: Guillaume Paulien, chanoine de St-Georges de St-Paulien, possessionné au Puy en 1304 et qui testa le 14 mai 1331, nommant son frère Philippe et son neveu Jacques Paulien fils de Barthélemy habitant le Puy; et Raymond Paulien, notaire public, cité dans une charte du 29 août 1335 concernant les Hospitaliers du Velay. ...
