Antica ed assai illustre famiglia francese, originariamente detta Peragin, con residenza in Puy, la quale, numerose volte, diede consoli ed esperti notai alla propria madre patria. Un ramo di tal casato, inoltre, anteriormente al XIV secolo, giunse nel Regno di Napoli, al seguito dei re angioini. Stabilitasi in Puglia, nel corso dei secoli, a causa dei soliti fenomeni di fonetica dialettale e dei frequenti errori di tradizione manoscritta, la famiglia iniziò a cognominarsi Peragine. In ogni modo, tal casato venne, verosimilmente, fregiato del cavalierato, in seguito alla partecipazione, connotata da un'elevata maestria d'armi, di un Antoine Peragin, sotto i vessilli di Carlo I d'Angiò, alla battaglia di Benevento, nel febbraio del 1266.
