Antico ed illustre casato, sorto dall'unione di due nobilissime famiglie: quella dei Persano e quella degli Adorno. Quest'ultima, è una famiglia patrizia e dogale genovese, che nel secondo cinquantennio del secolo XIV e in tutto il sec. XV salì in altissimo grado. Si ebbe dagli storici e genealogisti origini e provenienze svariate, tra le quali piaceva far prevalere la leggenda dell'origine teutonica. Conviene credere, per contrario, che ella abbia avuto provenienza e nome dalla borgata di Adorno, ch'è presso Tàggia nell'estrema Riviera di Ponente. Un primo ricordo del casato lo si trova nella menzione di tale Anna Felice vedova, fatta il 1186 (12 gennaio) in un atto notarile. Questo medesimo o altro omonimo testimoniava in un istrumento del 1210 (15 ott.); e così compariscono a quel tempo un Barisone e un Pietro (1212), dal quale Barisone, germogliarono i rami rigogliosi di questa grande famiglia.
