Todo apellido vasco, en general, es toponímico y, por lo tanto, relativamente fácil hallar su procedencia y significado, puesto que no faltará en aquel país la casa o lugar de donde fué adoptado por los antecesores de los que lo llevan. Así ocurre con el apellido P., cuyo significado, traducido al español, es el de "Pendiente del Llano". Para comprobarlo, basta con rectificar su corrupción y añadir la voca I, obteniendo así el significado completo, que es "Iper-Tica". Y trasladándose al lugar donde existe la casería o tierra de ese nombre, su situación comprobará el significado de su denominación. El caserío "Pertika" se halla en la anteiglesia de Berriatúa (Vizcaya), aislado en las montañas de este pueblo y a pocos metros de la "muga" de Guipúzcoa, en las condiciones señaladas por el significado de su nombre. Fué construído a mediados del siglo XV por el matrimonio Juan y Catalina de P. en terrerno perteneciente a la Abadía de la Colegiata de Zenarruza (Vizcaya), cuya tierra se llamaba "Pertika", nombre que tomaron como apellido dichos esposos o sus antecesores, aplicándolo también a la casería. Por su construcción en terreno de la Abadía, el matrimonio antes citado pagaba anualmente varias fanegas de trigo en concepto de renta, según documentos que existen en dicha Colegiata de Zenarruza. Este apellido es muy abundante en Vizcaya, y los que lo llevan están diseminados por diferentes partes de aquel país, tratándose como parientes la mayoría de ellos. ...
