Basadas en el estudio minucioso de este nombre comprobamos que el mismo ha sufrido variaciones de dialecto tales como (formas contractas) diminutivas, leniciones, errores debido a malas transcripciones. Sabemos que el nombre Pezzotti del cual tenemos datos históricos y heráldicos en las fuentes bibliográficas de Araldis, es originario de Cilento, donde fue jefe de Caballería el militar Stanislao de Pezzotti, quién vivía en 1109. Se dividió en dos grandes ramas. Una se quedó en Cilento y la otra pasó a Salerno. Esta se dividió en tres; la primera que se fue a Nápoles, se extinguió con el paso de los años; la segunda fue investida con el título de Marqueses de Civitarentega, a finales del siglo XIIX por la familia Grimaldi y de las tercera no se tiene noticias desde 1834. De la rama de Cilento descienden los P., Duques de Cajanello. Esta familia ganó la nobleza en Amalfi, en Salerno, en el sitio de Campo y en el de Portaretese y en Nápoles en los sitios de Montaza y Portanueva. De ellos Gerosolim SMO vistió los hábitos en 1551. Obtuvieron 35 baronías, los marquesados de Civitaretegna y de Campodisola, el ducado de Cajanelo y el Principado de S. Pio de Camera. Francisco P. fue Juez de la Gran Corte della Vicaria en 1549; Giovanni Alfonso, Capitán de Guerra en la ciudad de Bari en 1553; Octavio, Teniente General de la Milicia del Reino en 1647. Esta familia dió a la Iglesia, el Obispo César de Sulmana y de Valva en 1593; Don Clemente P., Obispo de Aguila y después de Castellammare en 1551, un Antonio P., Arzobispo de Sorrento, en 1641. Otros en los sitios de Camaro y de Portaretese y en Nápoles, en los sitios de Montagna y Portanueva. Dicha familia fue privilegiada con el Reconocimiento de la Corona en 1492 por el Rey Fernando II de Aragón. Bajo los colores de malta en 1551, el Priorato en 1790 en persona del Caballero Gio.
