Famiglia ritenuta d'origine normanna. Da Squillace passò nella seconda metà del sec. XV in Terra di Bari. Nel 1464 Francesco ottenne il feudo di Canneto (Bari), sul quale nel 1625 Giuseppe ebbe il titolo di marchese. Perduto questo feudo nel 1720 per vendita fatta alla famiglia Nicolai, altro Giuseppe fece acquisto nel 1723 d'una terra denominata anche Canneto, sita negli Abruzzi, elevata a principato l'11 settembre 1732 dall'imperatore Carlo VI. Il detto Giuseppe ottenne pure il diritto d'accollare il proprio stemma all'aquila imperiale austriaca. Questa famiglia fu ricevuta nell'Ordine Gerosolimitano dal 1639, venne aggregata al patriziato di Bari, e dichiarata nel 1850 ammissibile nelle Regie Guardie del Corpo. Con Regio Rescritto 28 nov. 1857 venne riconosciuta nei titoli di principe e marchese di Canneto, e per successione delle famiglie Guglielmini ed Ardia in quello di marchese di S.
