L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di illustri genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata in un soprannome, basato, a sua volta, sull'omonimo vocabolo dialettale genovese, il cui significato è "becco, naso", probabilmente, riferito ad una caratteristica fisica, di un, oggi ignoto, capostipite. In ogni modo, la famiglia, verosimilmente, venne fregiata del cavalierato, in seguito alla partecipazione, connotata da coraggio ed onore, sotto i vessilli dell'ammiraglio della flotta genovese Gianandrea Doria, di un Luigi Pitto, al celebre fatto d'armi della Battaglia di Lepanto, del 1571.
