El apellido P. es netamente catalán y originario de la villa de P. (cuyo nombre tomara), perteneciente al partido judicial de Solsona y provincia de Lérida. Desde luego induce a creer que el nombre del linaje está relacionado con el de la citada villa, el hecho evidente de que en la provincia de Lérida tuvieron muy antiguo asiento los antecesores de esta familia y de que en ella fueron señores del castillo del lugar de Ribelles, que pertenece al partido judicial de Solsona; del castillo de Montsonís, lugar del partido de Balaguer, y de tierras enclavadas en la veguería de Urgel. Los P. se extendieron también por las restantes provincias catalans, creando nobles casas solariegas en el lugar de Montclar, del partido judicial de Berga y provincia de Barcelona, en esta ciudad y en la de Manresa; en el lugar de Almor, del partido de Olot y provincia de Gerona; en el de Celrá, de esta última población, y en la villa de Torroella de Montgrí, del partido judicial de La Bisbal, que pertenece igualmente a la provincia de Gerona. También hubo casas de P. en las islas de Mallorca y Ibiza. De la ciudad de Tarragona fue natural y vecino Luis P., que en su mujer, doña Lucrezia Ballvona, nacida también en Tarragona, tuvo a Joaquín P. Ballvona, natural de Tarragona y señor de Mas Ricart, que caso con doña Jerónima de Castellví, de la misma naturaleza.
