Comencemos por decir que este linaje no tiene, en su primitivo arranque, el origen portugués que se le ha atribuído, ni pueden ser aceptadas como seguras las noticias que algunos tratadistas recogen de sus remotos progenitores. El principio del linaje P. es, sin duda, español. Más concretamente: tuvo su origen en Asturias, ya que asturiano fué su fundador. Pero por haber pasado éste a la conquista de Portugal con el Conde don Alfonso Enríquez, quien premió sus hazañas y servicios dándole el lugar de Puerto Carrero, en el que fundó casa solar y cuyo nombre sirvió de apellido a sus descendiente, nació la equivocada creencia de su procedencia lusitana. El fundador del linaje fué Don Gacía Afonso, ricohome del Reino de León, padre de Raimundo García de Portocarreiro, que pasó con el Conde Don Henrique a Portugal, donde fue heredado en el concejo de Portocarreiro, a media legua de Canavese, de cuyo señorío tomó el apellido que sus descendientes usaron ya en la forma española de Portocarrero, al pasar de nuevo a España. Probó su nobleza numerosas veces en las Ordenes de Santiago, Calatrava, Alcántara, San Juan de Jerusalén y en las Reales Chancillerías de Valladolid y Granada. Don Luis P. fue creado Conde de Palma del Río en 22 de noviembre de 1507; Grandeza de España en 2 de agosto de 1697 al V Conde, Don Luis Fernández-P. y Bocanegra, Marqués de Almenara y Montesclaros. ...
