Famiglia trasferitasi dalla Toscana in Bologna, dopo la battaglia di Montaperti (1260). Nella prima metà del 1300 vi è menzione di un Domenico, padre di Giovanni detto Zenane. Il figlio di questi, Antonio, nel 1407, è fra i sedici riformatori nobili, gonfaloniere di giustizia ed ambasciatore presso diversi principi. Girolamo, figlio di Antonio e di una Caccianemici, dottore in medicina e filosofia, viene ascritto nel novero dei senatori (1460) da Sante Bentivoglio, che lo nomina suo medico, e da principi e cardinali è celebrato e ricercato. Nicolò Sanuti lo designa a suo successore nella Contea della Porretta, nella quale lo conferma nel 1474 il papa Sisto IV. E' inviato ambasciatore presso Paolo II, i Visconti e i Gonzaga.
