Ed infatti la distribuzione geografica in Italia ci supporta in tal senso; la modificazione cognominale avvenne già in patria ma si consolidò quando alcuni esponenti della famiglia emigrarono oltreoceano e nelle anagrafiche locali vennero trascritti i loro cognomi in maniera differente. Loro patria fu dunque il Veneto ed il capostipite si rinviene in un Rizzotto o Rizzetto Colonna, fiorito in Castelfranco nel 1430.
