Família das mais ilustres e antigas de Portugal, pois provém de D. Arnaldo de Baião casado com D. Ufo, de quem nasceu D. Gosendo Araldes de Baião cavaleiro muito esforçado, que serviu os reis de Castela, D. Fernando e D. Garcia nas guerras contra os Mouros. A seu pai sucedeu no senhorio de Baião e em muitas fazendas nas margens do Cávado e foi senhor de Penaguião e no ano de 1030 governador de Justiça. Do seu casamento teve Egas Gosendes de Baião, rico-homem de D. Afonso VI, Rei de Castela, figurando como confirmante nos anos de 1111 e 1112. Em 1124 deu foral á vila de Sernancelhe. Foi casado com D. Useu Viegas, filha de D. Egas Ermiges, o Bravo, e de D. Gorinha Eriz, de cujo matrimónio houve D. Hermígio Viegas, de Baião, que se recebeu a primeira vez com D. Teresa Pires de Bragança, filha de D. Pedro Fernandes de Bragança, de quem proveio descendência e a segunda com D. Urraca Afonso, filha de D. Afonso de Baião, marido de D. Maria Gomes da Silva, viúva de D. Paio Soares Correia e filha de D. Gomes Pais de Silva e de D. Urraca Nunes. Nasceu deste casamento Afonso Rodrigues, o Rendamor, que contraiu matrimónio com D. Maior Pires, que fora freira no mosteiro de Arouca, filha de Pedro Fernandes Portugal, e de D. Froilhe Rodrigues, de Pereira, da quel teve entre outros filhos a Martim Afonso de Resende e a Giraldo Afonso, cujo apelido tomou do senhorio de Resende que lhe veio por linha feminina.
