Es originario de la provincia de Bearne (Francia) de donde pasó a Cataluña, Aragón y Valencia y más tarde a Castilla. En Cataluña se extendió por el Empordá, territorio que comprende pueblos de los partidos judiciales de Figueres, La Bisbal, Gerona y Olot, todos de la provincia de Gerona, y pasó también a las restantes catalanas. De las líneas establecidas en el reino de Valencia, una de ellas tuvo casa en la ciudad de Castellón de la Plana. Conviene anotar que en las provincias de Barcelona, Lérida, Tarragona y Valencia hay varios lugares denominados R., cuyo nombre acaso tuvo en la antigüedad alguna relación con el del linaje. Hay, asimismo, en Aragón, en el partido judicial de Tamarite de Litera y provincia de Huesca, una aldea llamada R., a la que sin duda dió nombre en remotos tiempos la familia de este apellido, porque en el Archivo de la Corona de Aragón, entre los pergaminos del Rey aragonés Alfonso I que allí se conservasn, figura una escritura de aRnaldo, Preceptor del Hospital del Santo Redentor, de Teruel, quien con autoridad de dicho Monarca concede a Bonet de R. y los suyos el dominio perpetuo sobre muebles e inmuebles que poseían en el término de la citada aldea de R. Su fecha años 1188. Fué progenitor de la rama aragonesa Folte de R., natural de la villa de Monen, donde fué siempre tenido y reputado por noble.
