Del germánico Hrode-berth, "glorioso y famoso", o "victoria famosa". Roberto Belarmino era sobrino del papa Marcelo II. A los dieciocho años ingresó en la Compañía de Jesús. Fue profesor de Teología en la universidad de Lovaina. Gregorio XIII lo reclamó para el Colegio Romano, en cuyas aulas dirigió espiritualmente al joven Luis Gonzaga. Su actuación como profesor motivó la creación por parte de los protestantes de las Cathedrae anti-Bellarminianae. Habiendo desempeñado durante un tiempo el cargo de provincial de la Compañía en Nápoles, regresó a Roma para ocupar cargos importantes en la curia, fue nombrado cardenal y, poco después, arzobispo de Capua; constituía este nombramiento una manera de alejar de Roma el jesuita, en el momento en que controversia sobre la gracia se hallaba en plena ebullición. Muerto Clemente VIII, Roberto pudo volver a Roma, donde desplegó una gran actividad como político, teólogo oficial de la Iglesia y escritor particular. Murió el 17 de septiembre de 1621 y en seguida se inició el proceso de canonización, que duró por diversas causas trescientos años; fue Pío XI quien en 1930 beatificó, canonizó y declaró a Roberto. Linaje de Cataluña. Hubo una casa en Llagostera, provincia de Gerona, uno de cuyos miembros, Roberto de R. y Surís, fue agraciado con los títulos de Torroella de Montgrí, con grandeza de España, en 1907, por Alfonso XIII; conde de Serra y Sant Iscle, en 1891, por la reina regente, y marqués de R., en 1888, por el papa León XIII. ...
