Nobility crown RománHistoriadores y genealogistas antiguos de reconocida autoridad tratan de este linaje, y algunos, como el Conde don Pedro de Barcelós, Salazar y Mendoza y Argote de Molina, remontan su origen hasta don Fruela I, Rey de León y de Asturias, que murió el año 768 a mano de su hermano Aurelio. También el "Nobiliario de Galicia", de Gándara, confirma el mismo origen, y de las noticias que esas y otras prestigiosas fuentes históricas nos legaron, resulta que el progenitor de la familia R. fué el Infante don Román Fruela, hijo del citado Rey don Fruela I y de su mujer doña Hermisenda Romaez, Señora del feudo de Santa Marta de Ortigueira, en la jurisdicción de la hoy villa de Ortigueira, del partido judicial y provincia de La Coruña Allí radicó el primitivo solar del linaje, del que fué Señor el citado Infante don Román Fruela, también primer Conde de Monterroso y uno de los guerreros más destacados de su época. Casó en 773 con doña Teresa Arias (hija del Conde don Arias Núñez "el Gordo" y de su mujer doña Aldora Osorio), y dió a sus descendientes como apellido su nombre propio que llevó su hijo Rodrigo Román o Romaez, que fué Ricohombre, Conde de Monterroso, Señor de Santa Marta de Ortigueira y de otros muchos estados y constante partidario de su tío el Rey Don Alfonso II "el Casto", y todos los que le sucedieron. ...
