Antica ed assai nobile famiglia spagnola, conosciuta come Rotolo o Rotulo, la quale passò a risiedere in Sicilia, insediandosi nei territori limitrofi alla città di Aragona. Un ramo del casato è inoltre fiorito in Francia, dal momento che si ha memoria di due baronetti provenzali, ossia Alfonso e Carmelo Rotolo. In Spagna i primi riferimenti al casato hanno già nell'anno 988, dal momento che alcuni Rotolo ou Rotulo erano tra i cavalieri al servizio del conte Gonzalvo nella disperata difesa di León. Il conte era infatti così malato che si fece trasportare in battaglia in lettiga. La città fu distrutta e tutti i soldati, compreso il conte, uccisi.
