De principios del siglo XIII arrancan las noticias ciertas y repetidamente comprobadas que de este noble apellido catalán se tienen. Es lo más probable que sea originario del lugar de Rubí, cuyo nombre tomara, y que pertenece al partido judicial de Tarrassa y provincia de Barcelona. Se extendió por Cataluña y pasó a Valencia, Mallorca, Aragón y otras regiones de España. Una de sus más antiguas casas solares radicó en la villa de Puigcerdá, de la provincia de Gerona. Otra tuvo en Barcelona. También tiene mucha antigüedad la que esta familia fundó en Mallorca, en la villa de Lluchmayor, del partido judicial de Palma, y que ya era muy conocida y principal en los comienzos del siglo XIV. Otros R. catalanes fueron creados marqueses de R. Una de las ramas derivadas de la casa de la villa de Puigcerdá residió en la ciudad de Gerona y de esa rama fue el caballero Pedro R., natural de Gerona y vecino de Valencia. Lo cita mosén Jaime Febrer, diciendo: "Fue muy querido del rey don Pedro (Pedro III de Aragón) que conocía su desinterés, sin tener nada propio, pues sus haberes los repartía entre los soldados: Era natural de Gerona y habitaba en Valencia. Poseía a Serratella y Ferrig, añadiéndole la benignidad del rey, en pago a sus servicios y pericia en el arte de la guerra, del que tenía mucha experiencia, parte de las tierras del término de Canet". Dejó descendientes en Valencia. ...
