Este apellido, muy antiguo en Cataluña y Valencia, lo encontramos escrito en las formas indicadas. Entre los expedientes de pruebas de nobleza para vestir el hábito de la Orden de San Juan de Jerusalén, en el Gran Priorato de Cataluña, figuran los de varias señoras apellidadas S. Ya en el año 1250 aparece como fundadora doña Marquesa S. Poco después resignó el cargo en un hija suya del mismo nombre y apellido, y falleció el 1 de mayo de 1268. Fue hija de Ramón de Cervera señor de Cervera, etc. y en 1224 había casado en Milagros de Urgell con Guillermo de Guardia Alada. Se la llamó siempre doña Marquesa S., tal vez por derivación de esta apellido del primero de su marido. La hija y sucesora de la citada doña Marquesa fue doña Geralda S., fallecida el 10 de octubre de 1285. Y desde principios del siglo XV hasta fines del XVII, otras cinco señoras S. probaron su nobleza para ingresar en la misma Orden. Mosén Jaime Febrer, en sus Trovas, menciona a Guillermo Zaguardia, que pasó a la conquista de Valencia en servicio del rey don Jaime I de Aragón, y dice: "Estando en Museros (lugar valenciano del partido judicial de Sagunto) cautivó la hueste del rey sesenta moros. Guillermo Zaguardia, que por sus hazañas era de todos estimado, se los pidió al rey manifestándole que no reparase en hacerle tal honra, pues estaba cautivo Bernardo Aguiló, hijo de su hermana y podría cangearlo desde luego con ellos; y en pago de esta merced ofrecía cautivar otros tantos." ...
