Apellido de origen vasco, derivado de la casa de Ayala, descendiente de Don Nuño Álvarez de Amaya, a quien algunos llaman Don Rodrigo Álvarez, Conde y Gobernador de Asturias, Señor de Gijón, que casó con Doña Gontroda Gutiérrez, de la casa de Castro. El linaje de S. procede de Don Vela, hijo bastardo de un Rey de Aragón que pasó a servir a los Monarcas de Castilla. Es considerado como el linaje más antiguo de los que se establecieron en Vizcaya, y aunque se extinguió pronto, dió vida, sin embargo, a varias de las familias más importantes de Vizcaya y Álava. El último de los S. murió en el reinado de Don Alfonso XI, y a pesar de ésto, son numeroros los que hoy mismo llevan dicho apellido. Varias familias lo adoptaron como suyo poco después de morir el último de los S. Una de ellas fue la de Zamudio, pues uno de los hijos de Ordoño Zamudio abandonó su apellido para adoptar el de S. También el primogénito de Lope García de Salazar y Calderón, perteneciente al linaje de S. cambió su apellido por el de S., sin duda por haber heredado de su padre el solar de Juan Sánchez de S., llamado Aranguti de S.
