La tradizione vuole che sia oriunda dall'Albania, da dove dovette emigrare a causa dei turchi nel secolo XVI, trasportandosi a Porto S. Giorgio (Ascoli Piceno). Ritiene per suo capostipite in Italia un Prenta, o Prente, di Giorgio, detto l'Albanese, vivente nella prima metà del secolo XVI; e per parecchio il cognome della famiglia fu "Prenta di Giorgio Albanese". Il cognome attuale nacque, secondo alcuni, dal soprannome dato ad uno della famiglia, il quale salvò nell'Adriatico una nave a cui si era appiccato il fuoco; secondo altri da Salvatore, figlio di detto Prenta. La famiglia si trasferì poi a Fermo, dove venne ascritta a quel patriziato in persona di Luigi, nel 1772, essendo egli stato elevato al grado di consigliere di cernita.
