Né le 7 avril 1736 au château du Bois de Sanzay, canton de Thouars (Deux-Sèvres), il était fils de Louis, chevalier, seigneurie du Bois de Sanzay, de Cherves, de Relay, etc. et de Catherine-Thérèse Perrin. Chanoine de la collégiale de Saint-Hilaire-le-Grand de Poitiers, grandvicaire de ce diocèse, abbé du Monastier Saint Chaffre, archevêque de Vienne, il émigra en Italie pendant la Terreur. Rentré en France en 1800, il fut nommé archevêque de Bordeaux (1802), créé comte avec succession à ses neveux (18 mars 1809), pair de France sous la Restauration et commandeur des ordres du Roi. Ce prélat, mort le 11 Juillet 1826, appartenait à une noble famille du Poitou divisée en deux branches: celle des comtes d'Aviau de Piolans et celles des comtes d'Aviau de Bois de Sanzay. A ce nom, on attribue un signe distinctif de noblesse représenté par le blason que l'on reproduit ci-dessous et qui confirme aussi à travers ses emblêmes, au point de vue historique et héraldique, l'assurance d'une valeur remarquable.
