Famiglia d'origine meranese che ebbe la nobiltà del Sacro Romano Impero con diploma dato a Regensburgo il 18 giugno 1591 a Davide Wagner, che era consigliere arciducale a Innsbruck. Il 27 settembre 1650 altro Davide ebbe il titolo di Barone dei Paesi ereditari austriaci col predicato di Sarenthein, essendo entrato per acquisto in possesso della Kellerburg in val Sarentino. I fratelli Davide e Lodovico, nonchè i loro cugini Carlo, Francesco, Domenico e Giuseppe vennero elevati al grado di Conti del Sacro Romano Impero con diploma del 12 dicembre 1681, che concesse loro l'abbandono del cognome di Wagner e l'assunzione a cognome del predicato di Sarnthein. Lo stesso diploma modificò lo stemma di famiglia. Maria Luigi Ferdinando, fu magistrato esimio, consigliere intimo e Ciambellano imperiale.
