Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, essa è originaria della città di Messina, ove è attestata sin dal secolo decimosesto. Il personaggio che maggiormente ha reso celebre questa casata è senza dubbio alcuno il pittore, scienziato e numismatico messinese Agostino Scilla (Messina, 10 agosto 1629 – Roma, 31 maggio 1700), figlio del notaio Giovanni Scilla. Membro dell’Accademia di Messina “della Fucina” e soprannominato “Lo Scolorito”, egli è ricordato come uno dei fondatori della moderna paleontologia. L'instabilità politica di Messina lo portò a trovare riparo in altre città. Dopo il fallimento della rivolta antispagnola, nel 1678 fu ospite a Torino di Vittorio Amedeo II di Savoia, per il quale dipinse le "allegorie" della "Fortezza" e ella "Giustizia", oggi esposte a Palazzo Reale.
