L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di molti genealogisti, andrebbe rinvenuta nel nome medioevale "Serius", una forma contratta del nome "Sigerius", del quale rinveniamo attestazione già 1171, negli Annales Pisani: "...A.D. MCLXXI, indictione IIIIor, in mense Novembris, Pisanorum Consules, scilicet Guittone Vicecomes, Sigerius Malpilii, Sigerius q. Ildebrandi Vicecomitis, Ubertus quondam Sigerii Carbonis...". Il nucleo originario, ossia quello ancora denominato Serij, ha goduto per molto tempo, come conferma il Viviano Marchesi G. nella sua "La Galeria dell'onore", del Patriziato Emiliano, continuando, successivamente, a godere degli antichi onori, anche nelle sue diramazioni collaterali. Tal casato, inoltre, come rilevasi da documenti ed atti notarili, sin dai tempi più remoti, diede luce a personaggi di elevate virtù, tra i quali, ricordiamo: Antonio, Patrizio di Recanati, dottore in "utroque jure", vivente nel 1562; Saverio, dottore in Sacra Teologia, ...
