Nobility crown SerpeCette maison chevaleresque était en 1239 l'une des plus anciennes et des plus opulentes du Bourbonnais. On trouve son nom aussi écrit Serpens. Elle a donné: Pierre abbé de Mozat (1252-1267); Isabelle, femme de Beraud II de Léotoing, chevalier, seigneur de Charmensat, Montgon, etc. (1344); Louis, qui fit inscrire ses armes en 1450; Gilbert, seigneur de Chitain (1506). Michel-Gilbert alias des Serpens, baron de Gondras, gentilhomme de la Chambre , chevalier de l'ordre du roi, gouverneur de Mâcon et des provinces de Beaujolais, Forez, Lyonnais, etc., se maria deux fois: I° vers 1550 à François de la Gorce, dame de la baronnie de Loudes, de Ceyrezat, de Pervenquières, de Vaux près Retournac, etc.; 2° à Marguerite de Rostaing, dame d'honneur de la reine, veuve en premières noces de Pierre de Lévis, baron de Couzan. De ce second mariage naquit: Françoise, alliée en 1606 à Hugues, comte de Rochebonne, chevalier de l'ordre du roi, fils du sénéchal du Velay; et du premier lit vint Philibert, chevalier de l'ordre du roi, marié à Marguerite de la Guiche, d'où neuf enfants, entre autres: Claude, comte de Gondras, etc., héritier de la baronnie de Loudes, marié le 23 décembre 1618 à Antoinette de Chalencon-Rochebaron, qui lui apporta les baronnies de Rochebaron, de St-Pal, de Tiranges d'Ambert, etc. Leurs trois filles furent: I° Suzanne, dame des baronnies de Loudes, St-Pal-en-Chalencon, etc., mariée le 14 février 1638 à Louis Armand XIX vicomte de Polignac; 2° Catherine, dame de la baronnie de Rochebaron, Bas, etc., mariée vers 1650 à Louis de la Rouchefoucauld-Langeac, comte de Laurac; 3° Gabrielle, dame de la baronnie de Gondras et dépendances, mariée en 1654 à Louis-Antoine de la Rochefoucauld-Langeac baron de Domeyrat, comte de Gondras. On trouve encore sous ce nom: des chanoines-comtes de Lyon; des dignitaires de l'abbaye de la Chaise-Dieu; un bailli d'Auvergne (1366); des chaveliers de l'ordre du roi; des gentilshommes de la Chambre; des chavalier de Malte (1529-1546); un lieutenant des gendarmes du maréchal de la Guiche; des gouverneurs de provinces, etc. ...
