Este apellido mallorquín aparece escrito indistintamente con las tres variantes indicadas en escrituras de los siglos XIII y XIV. Fueron miembros de esta familia Bernardo Escales, que en 1270 poseía la alquería "Binifausell" con jurisdicción civil; Andrés Sesescales, que figuró entre los que, en el año 1343, reconocieron a don Pedro IV de Aragón por rey de Mallorca y le juraron obediencia y vasallaje, y otro Andrés S que, en 1384, costeó el magnífico facistol que representaba un unicornio y se conservó en el convento de Santo Domingo, de la ciudad de Palma, hasta que en principios del pasado siglo lo destruyó el vandalismo. Fue jurado de dicha ciudad y reino en 1390 y 1393.
