Vestì l'abito dei cavalieri di Malta nel 1543 e possedette il feudo di Acquasanta, Badalami, Barilo, Cartolari, Castania, Guardalame, Portadimare, Rincione, Risignuolo, Saline di Valdemone e Sollia, i marchesati di Casale e S. Marino ed il principato di Roccacolomba. Si divise in due rami: dei Merli e degli Orinali. Ebbe il titolo di nobile per deliberazione della Commissione dei titoli di nobiltà del 22 gennaio e 10 aprile 1849. La famiglia è iscritta genericamente nell'Elenco Ufficiale Nobiliare Italiano del 1922 col titolo di nobile (mf.). Altro ramo.
