Descende esta antiga linhagem, uma das mais nobres da Galiza, de D. Paio Mendes Sored, contemporâneo de D. Afonso VI, rei de Leão, e de sua mulher, D. Elvira Godins filha de D. Godinho Fafes. D. Paio Mendes foi pai de Mem Pais, Rico-Homem de D. Afonso VIII e um dos conquistadores de Almeria, o qual fundou casa no vale de Soto, que por ser o maior do lugar ficou conhecido por Soto Mayor. Seu filho D.paio Mendes Sored de Sotomayor, foi Senhor do castelo de Sotomayor e o primeiro que assim se chamou, foi muito bom cavaleiro e casou com D. Ermesenda Nunes Maldonado, filha de Nuno Fernandes Maldonado, senhor da Casa de Aldaña, de quem deixou ilustre descendência que usou o apelido como Sotomayor, Sottomayor ou Soutomaior, conjunta ou separadamente. O seu sétimo neto, D.Fernão Annes de Sotomayor, Senhor de Sotomayor e Fornelos, e falecido em 1440, deixou dois filhos : D.João, casado com D.Filipa de Sá, de quem vêm os Sás Sotomayores; e D.Pedro Alvares de Sottomayor, um dos mais célebres Cavaleiros da Galiza, a quem chamaram Pedro Madruga, grande partidário do nosso Rei D.Afonso V, que lhe deu os títulos de Visconde de Tuy e Conde de Caminha, o qual casou em Portugal com D.Teresa de Távora. Dele ficou vasta geração, em Espanha, entre a qual os Duques de Sottomayor, e em Portugal, onde seu quarto neto, D.Pedro Taveira de Sottomayor, foi Cavaleiro da casa delRei D.joão IV, que lhe reconheceu o uso do Dom e lhe deu o apelido Muito-Nobre, que seus descendentes acrescentaram ao nome. ...
