Nel Giscardi "Origine e fasti delle nobili famiglie di Genova", si trova menzione in un'antichissima famiglia Spoggi, proveniente dalla Valle del Bisagno, alla quale appartennero i seguenti individui: Beltrame, consigliere nel comune di Genova e partecipante al trattato di pace tra i Genovesi ed i Pisani; Cristoforo, capitano di libertà e difensore del popolo, anziano. Nel 1528 furono ascritti all'Albergo Cybo Giorgio, Nicolò, Franco e Cristoforo; Battista fu capitano di galera sotto il governatore Filippo di Clèves. L'attuale famiglia risulta oriunda di Rigoroso in Valle Scrivia; paese importante perché confine della Repubblica di Genova con il sovrastante castello di Montalto, conteso tra questa e Tortona ed assegnato a Genova definitivament,e con la pace del 12 e del 17 marzo 1218. La famiglia appare in antichi documenti per giuramento di fedeltà del 1467 e così tra i più antichi atti conservati nell'archivio parrocchiale di Rigoroso col predetto nome "De Podio", ...
