Questa famiglia era consorte di quella dei Galeffi e, com'essa, trae origine dagli antichi signori della rocca di Corvaia e del castello di Vallecchia nella Versiglia (Lunigiana), detti anche "Cattani della Versiglia della Corvia e Vallecchia", i quali nel 1224 avevano fatta alleanza col comune di Pisa. Progenitore di codesta stirpe feudale e ghibellina fu un Gherardo, vissuto nel secolo XII, dal cui figlio Guido nacque messer Ugolino Sanna (1238), padre di un altro Guido, che da madonna Preziosa, detta "Ciocia", ebbe Lando (n. Pisa nel 1278), che nel 1314 veniva da Uguccione della Faggiuola, signore di Pisa e di Lucca, reintegrato negli aviti possessi di Corvia e Vallecchia.
