Antica ed assai nobile famiglia di Genova, che alcuni genealogisti fanno provenire dalla omonima località presso Genova mentre altri la vogliono originaria della Val di Sturla, nel territorio di Chiavari, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Vi è anche una consolidata tradizione, confermata dal Della Cella, secondo cui i Torriglia sarebbero un ramo dei conti di Lavagna. In ogni modo, i primi personaggi di cui si abbia nota sono un Giulio Silvio ed un Pietro, presenti alla pace pisana del 1188.
