E' noto agli studiosi l'interessante fenomeno dell'emigrazione lombarda in Friuli, che fu oggetto da parte del prof. Antonio Battistella di accurate ricerche, i cui risultati furono pubblicati nell'Archivio storico lombardo (anno XXVII, fascicolo XXVIII, Milano 1910). Morto nel 1269 il patriarca di Aquileia Gregorio da Montelongo, il Papa nel 1273 nominò a quella sede, ch'era reputata il beneficio ecclesiastico più insigne per grado, potenza e ricchezza d'Italia, il vescovo di Como Raimondo, della grande famiglia milanese dei della Torre. Cominciò allora, quasi repentina e inaspettata, l'immigrazione lombarda nella terra friulana, sviluppandosi rigogliosamente sotto i successori Gastone (1317), Pagano (1318) e Ludovico (1350), tutti della stessa casa, e continuando poi, più o meno intensa, anche nei tempi moderni fino a tutto il sec.
