Famiglia della contea di Nizza e propriamente di Villafranca, distintasi nella marineria militare sarda e italiana. Da Giovan Battista, capitano di vascello, nacque nel 1780 Giuseppe, che già al 1790 prendeva parte alle operazioni contro Tolone. Passò coi suoi sovrani, durante l'occupazione francese, nell'isola di Sardegna, ove si illustrò con una bella fazione contro i barbareschi, presso il capo Bon (1808). Contrammiraglio nel 1838, comandò l'armata sarda contro l'Austria (1748-49). Vice-ammiraglio (1849) fu fatto Conte, dal re Vittorio Emanuele II (3 aprile 1850) e poi senatore. Andato a riposo il 1859, morì poco di poi a Spotorno (31 luglio 1859). Due figli di lui, Giovan Battista e Augusto, furono parimenti ammiragli, Giovan Battista (nato 20 sett. 1812) partecipò alla campagna navale in Adriatico del 1848.
