La famille de Valbrune est ancienne en Périgord. Les registres de la ville de Périgueux nous le montrent occupant dans le XIVème siècle des charges municipales. Ainsi, en 1348, Pierre était consul, et environ un siècle plus tard et juqsqu'en 1547, date où Jean, seigneur de Laurière, fut élu maire, on relève une série de sujets de ce nom occupant la même charge. En 1547, un autre Jean, était qualifié de juge, et, en 1555, figure encore dans la liste des maires, un autre Jean Valbrune. A cette constatation de l'ancienneté de la famille, j'ajoute celle de sa noblesse, qui est incontestablement établie par sa présence , en 1789, dans les assemblèes de la Noblesse, soit pour voter pour les députés de l'Ordre, soit pour leur donner de nouveaux pouvoirs. On y voit en effet, le nom de Valbrune de Bèlair.
