I membri di questa famiglia ebbero origine a Pordenone da un Francesco Valta venuto dal Tirolo, come leggesi in un rogito di Antonio Rescotti. Essi si diramarono in diversi luoghi del Friuli, a Serravalle ed a Oderzo. Questa famiglia si rese celebre per molti e svegliati ingegni nella letteratura e poesia. Giambattista fu nel 1554 segretario della Repubblica di Ragusa, del Pontefice Pio IV, e del Concilio di Trento. A Venezia gli Valta abitarono nella corte omonima ai Frari, dove visse Ottavio, uomo ricchissimo ed assai reputato nella medicina. Si ricordano inoltre i due fratelli Pomponio e Girolamo, figli di Natalia, la quale aveva sposato certo Leonardi di Motta, senza casato; perciò essi assunsero il nome materno.
