Sans la grande révolution, la famille de Veaux, branche établie à Montignac, n'aurait pas eu besoin des titres d'anoblissement qui lui furent conférés par la Restauration, car, outre les charges qui lui permettaient de se qualifier, antérieurement à 1789, des titres de noble, d'écuyer, elle avait eu de plus suffisamment de chevaliers de Saint-Louis pour avoir de droit la noblesse héréditaire. Un représentant de la famille fut garde du corps, puis officier de chausseurs à cheval, sous la Restauration - personification parfaite des chevaliers d'autrefois - lequel, voulant rester fidèle à ses serments, brisa son épée en 1830, ainsi que son frère, officier supérieur dans le même régiment. Le fils de ce dernier, jeune homme de vingt-cinq ans, s'enrôler comme soldat dans les zouaves pontificaux - noble phalange dont il devait en peu d'années devenir un de ses brillants capitaines - et qu'une balle au coeur a frappé, en plein triomphe, au combat de Mentana, le 3 novembre 1867. Ce jeune héros se faisant tuer vaillamment à la tête de sa compagnie pour la plus sainte des causes, n'est pas une illustration pour sa famille seule; le Périgord, justement fier de lui avoir donné le jour, a dejà inscrit le nom d'Arthur Veaux parmi ses gloires les plus pures, et l'Eglise le comptera désormais au nombre de ses glorieux martyrs.
