Les seigneurs de Giovani, connus parmi la noblesse ancienne de Florence, passèrent en France vers l'an 1420, et changèrent leur nom en celui de Joannis. Le premier, qui fut qualifié seigneur de Verclos, est Pierre, fils de Laurent et de Marguerite de Siffredy qui épousa en 1627 Louise de Julian de Bedarides. Ledit Pierre fit, en 1640, l'acquisition de la terre et seigneurie de Verclos, dans la principauté d'Orange et prêta hommage au prince de Nassau le 13 février 1641, il fut nommé viguier d'Avignon en 1660. C'est de lui que descend la postérité de cette famille qui contracta des alliances avec les Forbin, les Thomas de Milliaud, les de Guérin, les d'Orléans de Catelina, les de Maurel, etc. Parmi les réprésentants actuels de cette maison on trouve: le comte César de Joannis de Verclos, marié le 24 août 1852 à Noémie de Gérin Ricard.
