La famiglia, originaria da Faenza, si stabilì a Bologna circa alla metà del secolo XV. Andrea, di Faenza, dottore in medicina, si distinse per la vasta sua dottrina, e fu rettore della Studio bolognese. Da Andrea derivò Leonello, che sposò Pantasilea Fava, di nobile famiglia bolognese. Seguendo questi le orme paterne, si laureò in medicina l'anno 1473, e divenne lettore della Università. Acquistata fama di valente medico, e resa la sua scuola molto rinomata, dal governo bolognese, il 2 aprile del 1489, fu creato cittadino bolognese assieme cogli altri suoi fratelli e discendenti, fra cui Antonio, esso pure dottore in medicina. Leonello morì il 5 gennaio 1520 e venne sepolto nella chiesa di S. Domenico. Da Leonello discese Nicolò che fu pure dottore in medicina di molto valore.
