Nobility crown ZentiliDue illustri famiglie di tal nome ebbero origine in Italia: una nelle Puglie, l'altra in Genova. Tracce della familgia si trova in Sicilia, a Catanzaro, patria di Mons. canonico Felice Antonio, e nelle principali città d'Italia. E' quindi naturale che i membri della famiglia abbiano avuto rapporti con Venezia: ciò avvenne specialmente nel secolo XIV in cui la vita commerciale s'intesificava nelle lagune. L'11 aprile 1364 Luca G., nobile genovese, nel cortile della casa di Andrea Trevisano, rappresentante il comune di Venezia, assistette al noleggio di una cocca (nave) per trasportare le milizie a Corone. In quell'epoca i Gentile (denominati nel dialetto veneziano G. o Zentili) originari da Pesaro, avevano già dimora a Venezia; erano ascritti nella Scuola della Carità, e nel 1398 ottennero la cittadinanza.
