De origen genovés, esta familia fue fundada en Canarias, por Don Santos Z., nacido en Génova en 1817. Era hijo de Don Tomás Z. y de Doña Isabel Libori. Don Santos Z. contrajo matrimonio en Arrecife (Lanzarote), donde se estableció, con Doña Micaela Herrera Martín, el 20 de junio de 1843. Fue un eminente literato y fundó la "Revista de Canarias" en 1878, "la de más valor científico de nuestra región en el siglo XIX".
