Antico casato bergamasco, detto Rizzetti o Rizzetto, di chiara ed avita nobiltà, trapiantatosi in Trevigi, nel XV secolo. La tradizione vuole che la famiglia R. sia un ramo della nobilissima stirpe dei Colonna. Essa, infatti, avrebbe tratto il proprio nome da un Rizzotto o Rizzetto Colonna, vivente nel 1430. In ogni modo, il primo di lei, di cui si abbia novella certa, è un Giovanni, nato in Trevigi, nel 1675, da Francesco R. e da Antonio Milani, gentildonna di Trevigi. Costui fece i primi studi in Padova, nel Collegio dei Somaschi, si applicò alle matematiche pure e miste, e, ritornato in Trevigi, ove dimorava, da qui spesso, si recava in un Villaggio, lontano due miglia da Castelfranco, che fu per lui "gran liceo" per i suoi studi letterari e di ottica.
